Matt's picking at Something to Believe in like a nice dry scab. The words have been proving difficult to finish, and Matt is clearly feeling that the song isn't doing what it should. He replaces the synth bass with some chunky moog, and then turns to me with that hopeful look and says, "how about some more guitar?".
We're looking for something in the chorus, and as so often happens I'm just noodling over the track while we're getting the amp and mics together and come up with something we like, which in this case is a Johnny Marr-ish descending line. It adds a bit of momentum at the right moment, and sounds even better with another track doing a harmony against it.
Then we move on to backing vocals. Matt's bored of regular bvs, so we try out doing them in stereo, which is kind of a waste of time, since it's only one voice coming out of one mouth. But it sounds A Little Tiny Bit Different, and he can waggle his head between the mics while he's singing for an exciting panning effect!
In the afternoon we put the Moog bass and then piano on The Lake. Now it goes wooooOOOOOoom.
