Dave's away next week so we ignore our three-song plan and get him in to do drums on Black Hole, which uses a similar setup to Cinderella. Black Hole seems to click with Dave immediately and it seems to be done in an hour or so.
Dan has had an idea for the epic playout/guitar solo section of Cinderella, which is that there should be some ridiculous drum fills, as ridiculous as possible. Dave is brilliant, you see, but he comes from the land of Jazz, and so he likes to approach parts as musically and sympathetically as possible. Sometimes this is not enough. Sometimes you need incendiary and masturbatory.
So we get Dave another coffee and explain what we need from him, and then we play Misty Mountain Hop to him extremely loud. Then we send him back to the booth with the click track running and tell him to just do fills.
It's one of the happiest half-hours of my life.
