Memory Man > May 23, 2006

Today we're doing electric guitar all day. I discover that Dan is pretty happy as long as I keep away from my Stratocaster. Even I have to admit that it isn't very brown. Very brown indeed is Matt's new Epiphone that he picked up in New York last time we were there (mmmmmm, dollars...), so I use that to record the plangent little riff in Vapour Trail. Something wonderful happens in the build to the last chorus when the riff goes against the chord change... if only you could someday get to hear it for yourself... (sigh).


The seemingly insignificant Memory Man
On the same shopping trip Matt also picked up a Memory Man analog delay pedal, which is good for swishy-swoopiness, so I fool around with that and a volume pedal for a while. You have to be careful though, because some guitar effects are so identifiable you can't use them without appearing to be quoting someone else. This kind of swoopy delay practically belongs to The Edge and is used enthusiastically by Radiohead and therefore every droopy white-boy sadband since The Bends, which is why we have to use it. We have no choice! It's like wearing jeans, it's an inescapable part of our culture.

Matt says he can hear an almost Metallica-oid guitar part on the otherwise delicate and spindly Human Shield that goes 'chun-chun-chun-chun-cha-chaaa' in power-chord fifths, so we try it out. He was right, it's good.

We have started compiling a list of the worst possible album titles.
